  10.                               REGISTRATION FEES
  11.  
  12.      As of June 1993, individual registration fees will increase slightly, and 
  13. site license fees will increase significantly; see ORDER.FRM and VDE.DOC.

  15.                          SPELLING CHECKER COMING SOON
  16.  
  17.      The next release 1.7 of VDE will have an optional integrated spelling 
  18. checker, allowing you to spell check an entire document with a single command.  
  19. The spelling checker will be available only to registered VDE users.  Watch 
  20. your favorite shareware source, or write for further information.

  22.                        GENERIC (ANSI.SYS) SUPPORT ENDS
  23.  
  24.      VDE 1.65 will be the last version to support the Generic installation 
  25. (DOS screen output via ANSI.SYS).  Future releases will use direct video 
  26. output only, supporting IBM compatibles and a few near-compatibles.  VDE 1.65 
  27. will remain available to users of other MSDOS computers who require it.

  29.                          NEW DEDICATED HP95LX VERSION
  30.  
  31.      In mid-1993, a version of VDE extensively customized for the HP95LX, 
  32. called "fastWRITE", will be offered as a retail product by ACE Technologies.  
  33. It will include a number of additional conveniences:
  34.          * full multitasking (popup/hotkey) ability under SWITCH! 2.0 API
  35.          * special HP95LX-style command menus invoked by MENU key
  36.          * manages HP95LX serial port power and light sleep features
  37.          * integrated spelling checker
  38. Registered VDE users will be eligible for a discount toward purchase of

  42.                           FOREIGN LANGUAGE VERSIONS
  43.  
  44.      Several foreign language versions of VDE are under development; one, 
  45. Finnish, is now available, with full documentation.  Please write if you need 
  46. a specific foreign version, or are interested in collaborating to produce one.

  51.      The following is a quick guide, for users of previous versions of VDE, to 
  52. noticable changes in operation.  Please check VDE.REF and VINST.REF for full 
  53. details.

  56.                                   VDE 1.65C
  57.  
  58.      Releases 1.65A-C are minor updates with largely internal improvements.  
  59. In 1.65B, there were a few changes in VDE's handling of DOS file attributes:  
  60. VDE will no longer edit Hidden or System files; the ^KO command can no longer 
  61. unprotect a file with the DOS Read/Only attribute; and when you load a file 
  62. that causes a "Graphics Overflow" error, the text will become R/O, not 
  63. "untitled".  In 1.65C, the menubar selection {File:neW} performs the ^KD 
  64. function, not ^KL (it now saves the current file, instead of abandoning it).

  66.                                NEW IN VDE 1.65
  67.  
  68.      * There is a new "Protected mode", toggled by the command ^KO.  When 
  69. engaged, the flag "R/O" (for Read/Only) displays alone in the header, and no 
  70. commands that would modify the file will be accepted.
  71.      If you load a file with the DOS R/O attribute, protected mode will engage 
  72. automatically.  See PROTECTED MODE.

  74.      * In the File Browser, the plus key "+" acts to tag or untag files.  You 
  75. can tag as many files as VDE has room to load.  When files are tagged, you can 
  76. load them all with the ^T key.  See FILES.
  77.  
  78.      * You can invoke the File Browser from the command line by entering VDE 
  79. with a command like VDE *.DOC.  See SYNTAX, FILES.

  81.      * A new feature has been added to filename parsing: you can include a 
  82. number in square brackets immediately after the name, and when the file is 
  83. loaded the cursor will be placed at that line (for nondocuments; page, for 
  84. documents.)  This works on the command line and at any VDE prompt.  Examples:
  85.             C>VDE PROGRAM.C[1204]               Starts at line 1204
  86.             Load new file(s): MY.DOC[20]/D      Starts at page 20
  87. The filemode, if specified, must come afterwards.  See SYNTAX.

  89.      * A number of MenuBar entries have been redesigned.  See MENUBAR MODE.

  91.                                  VINST 1.65

  93.      * The quote key used by VINST for alphanumeric data entry in hex strings 
  94. is now ['], which most people think of as the "single-quote", instead of [`] 
  95. as before.  Also, the double-quote ["] can now be used to duplicate the 
  96. previous value.  See RUNNING VINST.

  101.                       VDE 1.64 UPDATE SUMMARY (Aug 1992)
  102.  
  103.      * ^KM (not ^PZ) now sets a place mark.  ^QM (not ^QZ) goes to a place 
  104. mark.  ^PZ now inserts an actual ^Z, as you would expect.
  105.      * Filemode /A is now truly ASCII text, and does NOT interpret control 
  106. codes as printer commands, allowing them to display and print directly.  A new 
  107. filemode /D (Document) is now the default; it DOES interpret control codes.
  108.      * There is a new find/replace option "W" for "whole word only".
  109.      * Different .VDI (installation) files can now be loaded with the AltU 
  110. command, or with a semicolon on the command line.
  111.      * Block write (^KW) now offers a choice of Overwrite or Append if the 
  112. named file already exists.
  113.      * The Esc* command has a new toggle "X,x" to control margin release.
  114.      * Print toggles/switches (^PS, etc) always insert in document modes, 
  115. rather than overstriking, regardless of INSERT status.
  116.      * Prompt input now uses ^Y (not ^X) to erase the entire entry.
  117.      * The ^QT command will report "not found" if the given character doesn't 
  118. occur -- unless it is ^Z.  ^QT^Z will still delete to the end.
  119.      * In the file browser, pressing [Esc] returns you to the ">dir" prompt, 
  120. where another directory or filespec may be given; press [Esc] again to exit.
  121.      * VDE is now DESQview aware.  It will multitask more efficiently, and no 
  122. longer needs special installation to handle direct screen writes.  See 
  123. MULTITASKING and SCREEN SIZE for further information.
  124.      * Backup (.BAK) files are handled more like they were before 1.63: every 
  125. MANUAL save (^KS,^KX etc) once again updates the BAK file.  Autosave does not.

  128.  
  129.      * The printer driver "Reserve header space?" option has been replaced by 
  130. "Top margin if header used" and "Lines between header and text".
  131.      * There is a new User Option to select a default right justification 
  132. setting for documents (on or off).
  133.      * There is a new (separate) screen color for error messages.
  134.      * The Generic installation now asks whether it will be running on an IBM 
  135. PC.  Answer Yes to allow display of PC graphics characters.
  136.      * Screen colors for the HP95LX are still distinct from the IBMPC colors, 
  137. but are now also user-changeable.  To change them you must run VINST on the 
  138. 95LX (still selecting the "IBMPC" installation).
  139.      * There is a new 132-column installation option "T" for Trident SVGA.
  140.      * As of 1.64C, VINST can accept and display PC keystrokes like [PgUp] in 
  141. macro key definitions.

  145.                       VDE 1.63 UPDATE SUMMARY (Jun 1992)
  146.  
  147.      * There is a new command ^\.  Like ^L, it repeats the last find/replace, 
  148. but in the opposite direction.
  149.      * Whatever macro you have assigned to the key Esc0 will now run 
  150. automatically whenever you first enter VDE.  See AUTOEXEC MACRO.
  151.      * A pair of new macro test commands, Esc< and Esc>, allow comparison of 
  152. characters by ASCII values.
  153.      * New synonyms for commands formerly unusable in macros or Generic 
  154. Terminal mode: ^O= for [5], ^Q- for Shift[Tab], Esc^R/^C for ^[PgUp/Dn].
  155.      * When an error message displays, it is no longer necessary to press 
  156. [Esc]; it will disappear after 1.5 seconds, or upon your next keystroke.
